Matt Wood with the Wood's Bicycle Service & Repair van on the moors

IMI Level 3 Qualified Mechanic

Bicycle servicing and repairs across the Colne Valley.

I collect bikes locally, service them in my workshop and bring them back when they're ready. If you're not sure what's wrong, that's fine — tell me what you've noticed and I'll take a look before we agree any work.

Free local collection and return · No work starts until you've agreed the price

I'll check it first

If you're not sure what's wrong, I'll look the bike over for free and explain what I've found. I won't start any work until you're happy with the price.

Local collection is free

I collect and return bikes in Marsden, Slaithwaite and nearby villages. If you're further away, give me a ring and we'll work out what makes sense for the job.

All bikes are welcome

Road bike, mountain bike, e-bike or a child's first bike — I'll give it the same care and attention.

Common problems

Does any of this sound familiar?

You don't need to diagnose it yourself. Tell me what you've noticed and I'll work out what's causing it.

Brakes squealing or feeling soft

It might need a bleed, new pads or a simple adjustment. I'll check it and tell you exactly what's needed.

Gears jumping or not shifting

Cables stretch and hangers can get knocked out of line. A careful set-up will usually get everything shifting smoothly again.

A chain that grinds or skips

A good clean and set-up often sorts this. I'll also check for worn parts before recommending anything new.

Wheels that wobble or rub

I'll check the rim and spokes on the stand, then true the wheel and balance the tension.

A bike that's been in the shed for years

Bring it as it is. I'll check it over and tell you whether it's worth repairing before you spend anything.

An e-bike you'd rather not touch

E-bikes are heavier and can be harder on their parts, but I'm happy to service the mechanical side of them.

How it works

What happens after you get in touch

  1. 01

    Tell me what's happening

Ring me or send a message. You don't need to know the technical terms — just tell me what the bike is doing and I'll ask anything else I need to know.

  2. 02

    We'll arrange collection

If you're local, I'll collect the bike at a time that works for you. If you're further away, we'll agree the best option when we speak.

  3. 03

I'll check it and call you

I'll inspect the bike, explain what needs doing and give you a clear price. Nothing starts until you've said yes.

  4. 04

I'll fix it and bring it back

I do the work myself and take the bike for a test ride before returning it to you.

My story

From engineer to bike mechanic

I've worked as a mechanical engineer for 24 years and ridden mountain bikes for about as long. I wanted to turn that experience into something of my own, so I qualified as a cycle mechanic and started looking after bikes full time.

When you leave a bike with me, I look after the whole job myself — from the first check to the repair and final test ride. You always know who has worked on it.

I enjoy finding out what's wrong and getting a bike feeling right again. Whether it's used every day or has been sitting in the shed, it gets the same care.

A few useful details

Things people ask me

Is collection really free?

Yes, around Marsden, Slaithwaite and the nearby villages. If you're further away, tell me where you are when you call. I may still be able to collect for a larger job, while a small repair may be easier to drop off. We'll agree it before you book.

What if I don't know what's wrong?

That's completely fine. Tell me what you've noticed and I'll take it from there. The first check is free, and I'll explain what needs doing now and what can wait.

Do the prices include parts?

The listed prices cover my time. If the bike needs any parts, I'll tell you what they cost and ask before fitting them.

What kinds of bikes do you work on?

Road, mountain, gravel, hybrid, commuter, children's bikes and the mechanical parts of e-bikes. Bikes that have been sitting in the shed for years are welcome too.

How long will you have my bike?

Most jobs are finished within a few days, and a Safety Check or wheel true can often be done the same day. I'll give you a realistic timescale when I see the bike and keep you updated if anything changes.

Am I dealing with you or a shop?

You'll deal with me throughout. I answer the phone, collect the bike, do the work and bring it back.
